Picture of Peyronie’s Disease
Friday, August 8th, 2008Peyronies seems to affect men who are generally in their mid-40’s but almost any age is a likely target from teenagers to older men in their 50’s and 60’s. Blood relations also seem to be more at risk indicating that a genetic factor may increase your possibility for developing Peyronies.
There is no known single causal factor for Peyronie’s disease but most doctors and other experts in the field agree that most cases appear to start from an injury sustained to the penis. Soft internal tissue becomes damaged within the penis with scarring developing. The area then gets worse by a build-up of plaque or a hardening of tissue called fibrosis. But please note that not all Peyronie’s cases develop from an injury.
Did You Know? Peyronie’s is somewhat uncommon, affecting between one and three men in a hundred. I know this doesn’t make you feel any better to know that you are one of the unlucky few.
Injury to the genital area appears to be the most common culprit for how it can get started, but not all cases of Peyronie’s start with a penile injury. It does not explain why many cases develop slowly over time and with no direct injury event to point to . It also does not explain why some men that have Peyronie’s disease will see it rapidly disappear or why a similar condition called Dupuytren’s contracture that can affect the hands and feet does not seem to result from severe injury.
Some doctors will recommend against surgery and suggest waiting one or two years to see if the Peyronie’s will clear up on its own, but this is little comfort to you since you are the one that has to live with the condition. Since it is hard to tell if the condition will worsen or stay the same or suddenly clear up this can be an added strain to simply waiting. The disease can play out very differently in each man that it affects.
Fast Fact: An interesting fact about Peyronie’s disease is around one-third of men will also develop a thickening or hardening of tissues in the feet and or hands.
Some men with Peyronie’s experience pain and some may even have severe pain while other men have no pain problems at all. The placement of where the plaque develops can also vary greatly from man to man. The size of the plaque, it’s hardness and position has no standard. These variations in symptoms can make the problem confusing as men try to figure out on their own what might be wrong with them.
Unless you experience physical pain the most debilitating effects Peyronie’s will cause will be psychological. The mental strain of dealing with this problem associated with your manhood can have crushing affects on your psyche and wellbeing. Dealing with the mental anguish with a professional and keeping communication open with your mate is highly recommended. The picture of Peyronie’s Disease is not a pretty one to imagine or to go through.
Quick Shot Info: Peyronie’s is most likely to occur between the ages of 45 and 60. A real “mid-life crisis”.
