Professional Copywriting

by Ray Edwards

Today we will look at what copywriting has to offer as a job.

There are a great number of benefits as a copywriter. The salary for a copywriter is much higher than the average wage in the United States. In 2005 the magazine Advertising Age said that the average salary for a copywriter was right around $60,000 when you included bonuses. You can imagine it will be higher now, given the inflation over the last two years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics came up with a similar but slightly lower number around $57,000.

Copywriting is far more flexible than many other jobs. Since your main focus is producing good copy, you don’t have to stick to a set hourly schedule like most jobs. This allows you to create your own schedule and live a fuller life, here’s an example: You can work less one day in order to go to Timmy’s ball game and then make it up at another time that doesn’t interfere with life’s more important events. You could not do this as easily in many other jobs.

Copywriting also allows for a great workplace environment. Many professional copywriters are part of an advertising agency, which can make for an excellent work environment. Quite often there are many creative and high-energy people surrounding you. You can throw ideas around with these people and sharpen your skills. These people produce a great environment because their intelligence and creativity will often challenge and motivate you. Advertising agencies vary in size, which helps you customize your work environment to your mind set and makeup. A smaller agency will give you a closer group of people to work with, while a larger agency will offer more competition and energy. As you can see, there is a lot of flexibility in your work environment.

Copywriting never gets boring because your goal is to produce well-made copy, which can be challenging. Advertising Agencies often give you many different kinds of clients with many different kinds of demands, creating an ever-changing project list. This variety will make everyday unique and work will never be “just another day at the office.”

Copywriting as a job offers great benefits no matter how you look at it. You are able to earn a good income, considering that the average wage is around $60,000. If you are able to establish yourself as a master copywriter, you can obviously earn a great deal more money than that as well. Your workplace environment will often be crackling with creative energy and will be extremely flexible, something you wont find in many other professions.
