Supply Chain Management Software: Strategic Managing

by George Purdy

A company has to have raw materials to create a product or service for potential customers, so supply chain management (SCM) is implemented by combining art and science. SCM is comprised of source, plan, make, deliver, and return. It provides a great opportunity for improvement.

The strategic portion of SCM is planning and having a strategy for maintaining the resources for meeting customer demand of your product or service. Suppliers who deliver good and services you need to create your product will be chosen by Source. You will also develop a set of pricing, delivery and payment processes with suppliers.

“Make” refers to the manufacturing process, including the schedules related to production, testing, packaging, and readying for shipping. “Deliver” refers to the planning that is often called “logistics” in a company. It relates to processing clients’ orders, creating a functional warehousing network, and so on. “Return” relates to setting up the means to accept clients’ returns of faulty or excess items and aiding clients who need assistance in regard to the items they have received.

Packages dealing in supply chain management are among the least unified in existence. The total number of tasks runs into four or five dozen, each with its own associated software. In some cases, companies have stitched the pieces together, but problems arise from the seams showing. Until the introduction of this product, no single software product existed to deal with everything.

The saying that any system is only as good as the information that it carries is doubly true of SCM. Thus, is the information that is put in to a demand forecasting application is incorrect, then the subsequent forecast will be incorrect. Also, if employees decided not to utilize supply chain systems and rather do things manually, obviously the system will be unable to provide an accurate picture of the company’s supply chain. Therefore, it is quite important to have proper management training and management coaching to have correct working of supply chain management software.

The process of removing humans from the supply chain is quite difficult. Most companies are too small to declare an immediate change in supply chain management software, even if the new product works better. Such alterations require retraining of employees and change in the way parts are obtained. In the real world, finesse must be applied to convince everyone that such a change is for the benefit of all.

Supply chain management software or SCM is a combination of art and science that improves the raw materials it needs to make a service or product and deliver to its customers. Source chooses the suppliers who deliver goods and management coaching a set of pricing, delivery and payment processes with the suppliers. Attempts have been made to assemble diverse chunks of software into a single package, but a complete package that is management training right for every company has remained elusive. So if the information entered into a demand forecasting application is not correct then you will get an incorrect forecast.
